Lower Layer 04:08
We can build a system We can emulate Him We can build a system We can emulate Him They said it was crazy Believing impossibilities A deterministic world A measurable reality The figment of free will The roles of our biology Organic circuits in motion Flipping bits and responding There's a reason suns shine and people choose to hurt somebody A time-invariant system encapsulated in our bodies Gather the set of inputs, all present and past and future Plot a graph of my choices and display it on a computer There's a layer underneath this place With the codes that govern our time and space With the alternating peaks and troughs Giving rise to the fundamental natural laws We can build a system We can emulate Him We can build a system We can emulate Him Reversing the arrow of time Change the fundamental laws Every outcome redefined Reenact the apple's fall The universe in a data set A timeline on a harddrive The machine begins to radiate Potent pulses far and wide A function in disorder you might call it divination I have come to the lower layer to rearrange these known connections You will argue the Hand of God, we can study Him We can build a system We can emulate Him There's a layer underneath this place With the codes that govern our time and space With the alternating peaks and troughs Giving rise to the fundamental natural laws There's a layer underneath this place With the codes that govern our time and space Modify the many peaks and troughs Giving rise to a new set of natural laws We can build a system We can emulate Him

Heard it ringing there must be nobody home But it's coming from next to me and I don't have a phone I see Anubis reprising his role once again Wake me up before the show His residence in your peripheral A voice in your closet so deep and guttural Voices from inside calling out for genocide Crackles through a radio and lost in time He keeps his chaos entangled with your paradise Let your impulse take you to his side You try to close them His knife will open Pinholes in your lids So you can see him Wise ones say he's just your imagining So why then do we all see the same thing Marches in like he's expected I can't say why but I know he's violent Feel his weight sitting down on the bedside Can't turn over to see I'm paralyzed Shoves blankets down my throat I suffocate I pray but God knows what is up, he's just watching Watching, laughing, hoping, smiling, anxiously anticipating Stick your inner monologue into a paper bag Said tape it up tight shove it underneath the bed Reanimates the detritus within Lurches out from under sounds like bones rattling His residence in your peripheral You try to close them His claws tear open Pinholes in your lids So you can see his Gracious offerings Letting you live out your dreams Your face on TV Still there is that leash With which he pulls you into his lair His club His personalized nightmare Wise ones say he's just your imagining So why then do we all see the same thing Marches in like he's expected I can't say why but I know he's violent Limbs go limp when he's near like spellbound Feel his weight, lungs deflate, I'm gonna drown Shoves blankets down my throat, cease breathing I pray but God knows what will come, he's just watching Watching, laughing, hoping, smiling, anxiously anticipating Just let me back in your blue box

Tried 03:44
All rise for the judge this morning I'm a little early because I failed to stay in bed With the sounds of my body groaning Just the cries of self-digestion Weight detected Fate inscribed Pleas rejected Court subsides You must not break your fast in the morning Wait til afternoon I'll try to satisfy the cravings With a TV screen But the clock refuses to move And I'm on my knees staring at the pantry All rise for the judge tonight I obeyed the ruling I suppressed my sick appetite See my wrists find a joy in counting Each of the visible bones on my ribcage Weight detected Fate inscribed Pleas rejected Court subsides The court will reconvene tomorrow I've done well today Sounds good when will these trials be over That's still far away It's June and the air is hot and thick I'm still freezing in my covers How am I supposed to stay asleep through the night As my body suffers

about

In his new EP, Lower Layer, Vogel dives further into the abyss. The opening, eponymous track foretells the birth of a machine capable of predicting all future events and the devastating consequences on the fabric of reality. “Your Peripheral” describes a haunting encounter with Anubis during an episode of sleep paralysis. The ghostly, “glassy” guitar riffs are suffocated by the abrasive power chords thick with distortion. In the final track, “Tried”, a victim of a harsh court sentencing struggles to make it through even the next hour. The EP reinforces Vogel’s penchant for dark themes, cryptic storytelling, and a musical medium that not only establishes the appropriate atmosphere but also delivers the punchy bass lines and swinging melodies that will make listeners want to move.
